Charles Albert Bender, the famous Indian pitcher of the Baltimore Federal League team, was born in Brainard, Minn., May 5, 1883. When eighteen years old he played his first baseball for the Carlisle Indian School team. In the spring of 1902 he pitched for Dickinson College at Carlisle. The following year he pitched for the Harrisburg Athletic club and played on various teams in Harrisburg. He signed with the Athletics in 1903. He is a right-handed pitcher and batter. He signed with Baltimore Federals in December. 1014.
"Rip" opened the season as a Card regular in '53 and went on to become one of the top rookies of the season. In '52 he was with Rochester, where he hit .296 and 13 Homers. 1947 was his first year in pro ball, and the next year at Fresno, he hit .322, 23 Home Runs and Batted In 125 Runs. "Rip" is a graduate of St. Cloud Teachers College.
