Gilbert James McDougald nicknamed "Gil" led the American League in 1952 in double plays. Tied World's Series records by batting in four runs and homering with bases loaded, tieing Elmer Smith, Cleveland, 1920 and Tony Lazzeri, New York Yankees. Also tied for number of errors by third basemen in Series of 1952. Elected Rookie of the Year 1951.
Bob didn't see full time action last season, but he added to the Redlegs important reserve power. Actually he started in Baseball as a pitcher with 18 wins in his first Minor League season. Similar to Babe Ruth's experience, Bob's managers wanted his big bat in the lineup every day and switched him to an outfielder. He came up to the Majors after hitting .376 at Nashville in 1949.
As a coach, Lee's father always aimed to educate his son on the fundamentals as well as the fascinating history of the game. He still does. "When [the family goes] out to dinner, it's just me and my dad talking baseball," the shortstop said. "I'm sure we bore the heck out of everybody else, but it's a special bond that we have."
