"Bud" Thomas came to the attention of major league scouts in 1932 when he pitched his team to the senior amateur championship of Washington. He became the property of the Washington Senators but they shipped him out first to Youngstown, then to Chattanooga. Landing with Atlanta in 1935, he won 20 games, and 18 the next year. Connie Mack bought him for the A's in 1937. Thomas was traded to the Tigers early last year and hurling mostly in relief roles chalked up seven victories without a defeat. Control is one of Thomas' main assets. In 33 games and a total of 60 innings of pitching, Thomas issued only 23 bases on balls last year.
Tom showed marked improvement in each of his last 4 seasons as he helped pitch Montreal to 3 straight International League Pennants. He won 9 games in '50, 12 in '51, 14 in '52. Last year he had the best Won-Lost Percentage in the International League. With Schenectady in '48 he set a Canadian-American League record by fanning 25 batters in a 15-inning game.
The veteran relief pitcher was signed by the Phils when he was just 16 years old. Steve began pitching professional ball in 1946.
