Randy's 2002 was marred by knee surgery, ending a 10-year run of masterful pitching. The Big Unit went 175-58 over the stretch, winning five Cy Youngs. From 1999 to '02, he copped four Cys while averaging 354 strikeouts. Johnson ranks fourth in MLB history in whiffs and first in SOs per game.
One of two brothers who starred in the big league, his brother Eugene having played with Cincinnati and the New York Yankees. Billy is a good hitter and a dependable catcher. 33 years old, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds, bats either right or left handed. Hit .263 in 82 games in 1932. He began his professional career with Waterbury in the Eastern League in 1919. 4 years later went to Washington: traded to St. Louis in 1925; sent to Toronto 2 years later, but came back to the American League with Detroit in 1928. Returned to Washington in 1930, but the next year was sent to Boston.
Mike joined the White Sox pitching staff last season after being traded by Washington during the winter of 1952. He pitched in the Minors only two years. In 1951, he won 17. lost 6 and had a 2.86 ERA for Big Spring. The next year at Havana, Mike had 14 wins, fanned 135 and his ERA was 2.66. The Senators called him up in 1952 and he had a 2-2 mark.
