The Giants missed winning the 1908 pennant 'cause a player didn't touch 2nd. Who?
View AnswerCoffee Talk Name that player!
Manager Ray Blades, pointing the St. Louis Cardinals toward a pennant, has high hopes for left-hander "Tom" Sunkel. Sunkel, who came to the Cards last year from Atlanta where he won 21 and lost only 5, did not see much action with the Cards but showed enough to earn a crack at a regular berth. He won 4 and lost 4 last year, including among his triumphs a nifty two-hit shutout over the New York Giants. Speed is one of the main factors in Sunkel's pitching - he topped the Southern Association in that department in 1938, and struck out 54 in the 85 innings he hurled last year.
The 1909 T206 Set received its name from Jefferson Burdick, author of the American Card Catalog. ‘T’ in the T206 name stood for 20th century tobacco issues while ‘206’ was simply a number assigned to it.
Fleet-footed Richie was one of the outstanding rookies in baseball last year. He appeared in 117 games for the Phillies and wound up the season hitting .333, the second highest average in the National League. He batted in 40 runs, and led the league in stolen bases with 32. Early in the season he had a 23 game hitting streak.
