Al won a regular berth in the Cleveland outfield last year by increasing his '53 batting average 41 points! A hard-hitting speedster, he grounded into the fewest double plays of any full time A.L. player in '54. Breaking in with Wilkes-Barre in '48 he batted .316, advanced to San Diego in '50 and went to Indianapolis in '52. Al batted .332 in '53 and was brought up by Cleveland.
Growing up in the tiny town of Demorest, Ga., Mize developed incredible hand-eye coordination as a tennis standout. He eventually swapped his racket for a bat, and his masterful motor skills helped him make history on the diamond. In 1947, he became the first (and still only) batter to slug at least 50 home runs with fewer than 50 strikeouts.
Won 9, lost 4, in 1950, second year with Dodgers. Joined them for the first time in 1947. Involved in no wins or losses, but hit a home run first time at bat in Ebbets Field. Won 20 games for Nashua in 1948. One was a no-hitter. Joined St. Paul in closing days of the season, and chalked up 4 more wins. With Montreal in 1949. Won 20. Led the International League in strikeouts with 176.
