Another Holy Cross player who has made good in major league ball. Joe Morrissey starred three years on the college team, playing at shortstop. He broke into professional ball with Hartford in 1927. The Reds bought him from St. Paul after the 1981 season. With St. Paul he batted .331 in 167 games, hit 22 home runs and stole 14 bases, He hit .242 with Cincinnati last season, playing at shortstop and at second base. Morrissey is a right handed batter, 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 170 pounds. Born in Warren, R. I., in 1905.
One of the hardest hitters in the National League. In 1930 lead the league in home run hitting, with 56 round trippers. His batting average for that year was .356 in 155 games. Wilson was born in Elwood City, Pa., in 1900. He began his professional career with Martinsburg in the Blue Ridge League in 1921, batting .356. Two years later, he led the Virginia League in batting. Joined the Cubs in 1926 and in 1932 was traded to Brooklyn. Last year, playing with Brooklyn, hit .297 in 135 games. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds. Bats and throws right-handed.
Shohei is one of only five players to notch at least 40 steals in one season and 200 pitching strikeouts in another. The other four all did so before the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893.
