One of the mysteries of baseball is why, one day, a pitcher is effective with all his stuff in perfect working order, and the next, he is hopelessly off form. Some- times when a pitcher feels best his pitching is least effective. As Red Ruffing of the Yankees explains it, "I am always wary when I feel good. Because my curve, instead of breaking twelve inches, perhaps will be breaking fourteen or eighteen, due to the extra power on the ball. Unless a man realizes this, his control will be off centre, and he will be missing the plate.
