The knuckle-balling right hander has been a pleasant surprise for the Braves. Although ticketed for the minors, Phil earned a place on the staff with a fine spring showing in 1965.
Regarded as one of best receivers in major leagues. He started in Organized Baseball in 1941 with Santa Barbara in California League. Until 1947 when he caught 130 games for Dodgers, he had never caught a full season with one team. After spending three years in service, he returned to baseball with Mobile of Southern Association and had caught 62 games for them when he was called up to Dodgers. In 1947 he was chosen as catcher on National League All-Star team. Led National League catchers in putouts and double plays for 1947.
The 26-year-old first baseman joined the Senators in the deal that brought Frank Howard from L. A. to Washington. In the minors Dick earned quite a reputation for himself. He was the California League's home run champion and RBI leader in 1961. Dick twice led his circuit in putouts while in the Dodger farm chain.
