"Rip" opened the season as a Card regular in '53 and went on to become one of the top rookies of the season. In '52 he was with Rochester, where he hit .296 and 13 Homers. 1947 was his first year in pro ball, and the next year at Fresno, he hit .322, 23 Home Runs and Batted In 125 Runs. "Rip" is a graduate of St. Cloud Teachers College.
Al is a graduate of Duke University where he received his degree in mathematics in 1956. He was one of the first players selected by the Colt .45's in the NL player draft of 1961. Off to a slow start last season, the speedster batted close to .350 during the second half to boost his season mark to .285, second best on the club. He led the club in triples with nine and in walks with 72.
Lynn Nelson is a hitting pitcher and his going to Detroit via the waiver route from the Athletics was a surprise. The stocky hurler acts as pinch-hitter and can play the outfield if necessary when not called on to pitch. He spent three seasons with the Athletics, winning 24 games for them. Nelson first came up to the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1930. was farmed out for two seasons, recalled in 1933 and sent back to the minors the following year. The Athletics purchased him from Memphis in 1937.
