Lynn Nelson is a hitting pitcher and his going to Detroit via the waiver route from the Athletics was a surprise. The stocky hurler acts as pinch-hitter and can play the outfield if necessary when not called on to pitch. He spent three seasons with the Athletics, winning 24 games for them. Nelson first came up to the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1930. was farmed out for two seasons, recalled in 1933 and sent back to the minors the following year. The Athletics purchased him from Memphis in 1937.
