"The Red Sox are counting a good deal on this young left-hander, who last season figuratively stood the batters of the International League on their heads. Pitching for Rochester, he won 16 games and was beaten only 7 times. He might have made even a better record, had it not been for an appendicitis attack which laid him low in July. Ostermueller is 26 years old, 5 feet, 11 inches. tall, 175 pounds in weight. He entered professional Baseball in 1926 after leaving St. John's College. In his early days he was troubled with pitching wildness, but now has good control."
"Skeeter" Newsome was purchased by the Philadelphia Athletics from Tulsa in 1934. In 1935, his first full year in the major leagues, "Skeeter" finished second to Bill Rogell, for the honor of being the best fielding shortstop in the American League. Newsome played in only 17 games with the Athletics in 1938, getting 13 hits, 4 of which were doubles, for a batting average of .271. "Skeeter" is well on the way toward becoming one of the greatest shortstops in the American League because of his defensive abilities, and at bat he usually manages to come through in a pinch.
