At the plate, Ed ranked 3rd in Homers and Runs Batted in 1951. In fielding, though, he led all American League first basemen in double plays with 143 and in putouts. Although he started playing organized ball in 1939, Ed didn't make the majors until the end of 1946, when he came up with Cleveland. Traded to Washington in '49, he hit .294 and .295 the next year when he was sent to the White Sox. Ed served in World War II.
Wayne had a truly impressive war record, having served with the Fightin' Marines at Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. A terrific hustler, he's known as "Twig". The Cubs brought Wayne up in 1949 after he had played 115 games for Los Angeles and hit .278. As a regular in 1950, he hit only .242 but banged out 10 homers. In 1951, he was traded to the Dodgers. During the off-season, he attends Western Michigan College.
A "sand lot" boy from Missouri, one of baseball's most colorful players. First played with Norfolk. After two war service years, joined the Newark Bears in 1946 to play in 77 games, hit 15 homers, batted in 59 runs and built an average of .314. He joined the Yanks at the end of that season to appear in 7 games. Last year he caught 83 games. Batting average was .280.
