Being a fast man on his feet Joe Kuhel, the Washington first baseman, plays a deep position when there is no runner on his bag. This has the advantage of letting his range deeper for Texas league flies or wider for hits to his right. Young first basemen often are confused by ground hits that travel wide of their position. They often hesitate a fatal split second, while wonder- ing whether the second baseman can make the stop. Best policy is, take any ground ball you can lay your hands on and put the burden of covering the bag on the pitcher, who must make a habit of coming over on every ball that may draw his first baseman off the bag.
