Often just flat-out unhittable, Mariano is challenging Dave Righetti as the top closer in the history of the Yankees. Already fifth on the franchise saves list, his total of 79 over the past two seasons eclipsed Rag's team record of 77 set in 1986-87. Among AL relievers in 1998, Rivera ranked second in ERA (1.91), sixth in saves (36). sixth in runners allowed per 9 IP (9.7) and eighth in OPP AVG with men in scoring position (167).

One of the big pitching surprises, if it can be called a surprise, is "Al" Milnar, lefthander of the Cleveland Indians. Milnar, who had his first try with the Tribe in 1936, was farmed out and recalled in 1938. He won three and lost one that year, and clicked with fourteen triumphs against twelve defeats last year, third highest among the Indian pitchers. He also had an earned run average of 3.82 over the 209 innings he hurled. This year he has proved a most effective pitcher, and if he keeps up his present pace should wind up with the league leaders.

Tyler delivered a clutch RBI on a sac fly to deep CF in his MLB debut, 9-19-23.
