Sammy shared the Catching spot on the 1952 Rookie All-Star Team, and rated high in the Rookie of the Year voting. In his first season of pro ball at Seattle, he hit .302. At Roanoke in '50, Sam made the Piedmont League All-Star Team. He hit .278 for Scranton in '51, and the Red Sox called him up. An ex-University of Washington basketball star, Sam coaches his alma mater's freshmen team.
