Wearing the Giants' uniform for the first time in 1950, Al played in all of their games. Batted .279, driving in 67 runs. Slammed out 36 doubles, 5 triples, 16 homers. Took part in some snappy fielding plays. Al's major league career began with the Braves in 1948. Hit .322. Was named the National League Rookie of Year. Attended LSU and Southwestern Louisiana Institute. All-round athlete.

Al concluded his big-league playing career in the junior circuit with the team he is now piloting. He holds the record for the most games caught in a lifetime in the majors (1,918).



In 37 games for the White Sox in 1951 with 15 wins and 14 losses. Had an earned run average of 3.04, which was the fourth best in the league. Began in baseball on a Detroit Tiger contract, hurling for Buffalo in the International League. With Chicago since 1949.
