Phil signed a big bonus contract with the L.A. Dodgers in 1959 and began his career in pro ball in the tough P.C.L. The righthander tied an A.L. record when he struck out seven straight batters in a game in 1966.



Elmer Baumgardner, pitcher of the St. Louis American League Club, was born at Alton, Ill., in 1890. His first real essay at baseball was at the University of Illinois, where he attracted such attention that the St. Louis American League Club gained his services at the close of the 1912 college season. During the late winter of 1914 Baumgardner went over to the St. Louis Federal League Club, but returned to the Americans before the season opened.
