Roberto was the Pirates' 1st choice at the 1954 Winter Draft. Originally signed by the Dodgers to a bonus contract, he showed his powerful throwing arm and extra base hitting ability at Montreal last year. During the Winter, Roberto played in the Puerto Rican League and placed 2nd in hitting. His 73 hits at Santurce gave him a glittering .365 Batting Average.
Injuries hampered the National League All-Star last semester but Ron is in tip-top shape once again in '66. In 1963 and 1964, the 2nd sacker led the Mets in batting and was voted team M.V.P. by the New York fans. As a National League freshman, Ron finished second in the Rookie-of-the-Year sweepstakes.
Came from Pittsburgh in deal that sent Billy Herman to Pirates as manager. Hit .283 last season, pounding out 24 home runs and driving in 100 runs. Finished 11th among top National league sluggers with .474 slugging average. Voted most valuable in 1947. Originally an outfielder.
