Bob's first year in the majors was 1948. Got into 26 games for the Cubs. Had a record of 5 and 11. Pitched 133 innings. Won 6 and lost 1 for Des Moines in 1947. Moved on to Nashville. Wound up with a 9-7 record.



Hampered by a serious knee injury last year, Bernie will be battling to win back his No. 1 role at second base this season. Bernie has one of the quickest pair of hands in the league and is acknowledged to be one of the best double-play men in the majors. In high school, Bernie was an All-American in basketball.



In 1938, his very first year of organized ball, "Hutch" was named the Minor League Player of the Year, winning 25, striking out 145 and posting a 2.48 Earned Run Average at Seattle. The Tigers gave him trials in 1939 and 1940. After winning 26 at Buffalo in '41, Fred served in the Army for 4 years. Back with the Tigers in 1946, he won 14 and has been one of their aces since. He won 18 in '47, 13 in '48, 15 in '49 and 17 in '50.
