My Biggest Thrill In Baseball: It happened on the second day of the 1953 season, the home opener in Milwaukee. The St. Louis Cardinals were the visitors. The game was tied as I led off the bottom of the tenth inning. On Gerry Staley's second pitch I hit a long fly ball deep into the right field corner. Enos Slaughter raced over and reached over the fence. The ball bounced off his glove for the winning run. It won the game, my first time playing before a large crowd, and was my only home run of the year.

Hit 42 home runs in 1951. Led the league in that department for the 6th straight year. Tied a major-league record, and extended his own National League record. Batted .309 for season and received the most bases on balls (137). Led in slugging percentage with .627.

A long future is promised "Jimmy" Brown with the St. Louis Cardinals. Brown was one of the outstanding players in the Cardinal drive for the pennant last year and finished with a batting mark of .298, driving in 51 runs, scoring 88 on his 192 hits. He played both second and short last season and was equally efficient at both posts. Exceptionally fast, he made 492 assists last year. Brown prepped for the Cardinals at Rochester and came up to the majors in 1937. He attended North Carolina State College before turning to professional baseball for a living.
