Joe has topped the .300 mark in both of his minor league campaigns. The 21 year old second baseman batted .323 Tex. Leag. in '64. Sonny had a late season crack with Houston in 1964, hitting an amazing .348 in 9 games. The young shortstop is good with a glove.
Pittsburgh grabbed Bartell from the semi-pro ranks in 1927 and sent him to Bridgeport in the Eastern League for a year. He came back to the Pirates in 1928 and hit for .305 in 72 games. Three years with the Pirates and now playing his third season with Phillies. A mighty good shortstop and also a dangerous batter. Last year he hit .308 in 154 games and fielded .963. He is 24 and hails from Alameda, Cal. He is a right-hander, five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 148 pounds.
The past season was a notable one in the major-league career of "Big Red" Ruffing, whose big league playing days go back to 1924, won 20 or more games for the fourth consecutive season; and brought his total number of victories to 214. Not too many pitchers in the history of baseball can show 200 or more victories. Last season Ruffing won 21 and lost 7 for the Yankees for the second successive year, had an earned run average of 2.94, and followed that brilliant season by pitching a four-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. His Series' record shows 5 wins against only 1 defeat. Included in his triumphs last year were four shutouts. Ruffing came to the Yankees from the Boston Red Sox in 1930.
