"Chuck" Klein, one of the most colorful players in the National League, and one of the hardest hitters in baseball, started in 1927 with Evansville, of the Three 1 League. He was acquired by the Phils in 1928: In 1930, 1931, and 1932 he led the National League in runs scored. In 1930, 1932, and 1933 he led the National League in total bases hit. In 1931, and in 1933, he led the National League in runs batted in. "Chuck" was voted the most valuable player in the National League in 1932. The Phils traded Klein to the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 1933 season. He returned to the Phils in the middle of the 1936 season, and was purchased, in June, 1939, by the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 11 years of major-league baseball, "Chuck" Klein has had 1896 hits, in 1447 games, for a batting average of .333. "Chuck" was the "home-run king" of the National League in 1929, 1931, 1932 and 1933. In 1936 he batted out four home runs in one day-to equal a feat held only by three other men.
Came to Phils in an off-season trade with the Reds. Expected to solve their 2nd-base problem. Connie's bat won the second game of 1952 season for the Phils with an 11th inning 2-run homer. In 136 games for Reds in 1951. Hit 16 homers. Batted .237, drove in 53 runs.
