One of the more promising outfielders in the league, Mel has a good chance of nailing down a regular spot in the Phillies' outer patrol. In 1951 with Schenectady Mel led outfielders in fielding with a percentage of .988. His 29 doubles tied him for the league lead in that department, and he hit .294. His first two years, 1947 and 1948, saw him with identical batting marks, .347.
Began professional baseball career in 1938 but didn't reach majors until 1949 when purchased by Chicago White Sox. Went to Boston Braves in 1950 and to Pittsburgh this winter. Has a record of 40 wins and 36 losses during four seasons in National League. Boasts a fine fast ball and excellent control.
George Earnshaw's hour of glory was brief in the American League but he left a definite mark. Big, strong, "Moose" Earnshaw was one of Connie Mack's big guns on the mound in the years 1929, 1930, and 1931, when they won pennants and twice went on to win the World Series. Earnshaw's major league career lasted only ten years, but in that period he won 127 and lost 93, winning 20 or more games three successive years, 1928 through 1931. He won 19 in 1932. His World Series record shows four wins and three defeats. He struck out twenty in three games in the '31 series.
