It was a serious blow to the Giants when Monte was injured in an exhibition game shortly before the 1952 season began. In 1951 he led the league in R.B.I.'s with 121. Batted .312. In 151 games. Had 24 homers, 11 triples, 19 doubles. Fielded .996, third best in league.
The fireballing righthander is one of the all-time great pitchers of baseball. He began with Cleveland in 1936; has been with them since, with exception of three years in service. He has won 20 or more games six times, each time has led or tied for most wins in the league. He has pitched three no-hitters. Bob also established the modern record for most strikeouts in nine inning game with 18.
Clyde, a slugger, began the 1953 season with the Boston Red Sox and after one game for them he was traded to the Senators. His record for the year was 119 games and a .260 batting average. He had 15 doubles, 3 triples, 11 homers, driving in 74 runs. Previously played with Cincinnati Reds in National League. Senators purchased him from their Syracuse farm, trading him to Boston in May 1950, then traded him back. Hit home run in his first major league at bat.
