Hailed as another "Jimmy Foxx", big Steve broke into pro ball in '45 with Allentown and got his first trial with the Cards in '49. His 120 RBI's with Winston-Salem in '47 was the 2nd highest in the history of the Carolina League. In '48, he led the Piedmont League in Batting (.333), Doubles (34) and Homers (20). In '49 at Rochester, he hit 4 Homers in 1 day, had a total of 34 for the season and led the International League in RBI's with 125. In May, 1952, Steve was optioned to Rochester.
Did a good job receiving for the 1950 Senators. In 75 games. Hit .287. Drove in 22 runs. Started out as pitcher. Switched to catching on advice of Hans Lobert when trying out with Giants in 1939. Not actually in organized ball however, until 1941. Homered for Trenton first time at plate. In Infantry, 1942-45. Taken prisoner in North Africa. Played for Seattle on return. Drafted by Senators.
Samuel Charles White nicknamed "Sammy" as he is called by his teammates and fans, originated in the far northwest, which is a section that normally does not contribute many outstanding ball players. Sammy started with Seattle in 1949 and played with various minor clubs until 1951, when he became a regular with the Boston Red Sox.
