MY FAVORITE BASEBALL MEMORIES by Richie Ashburn. My greatest thrill was first walking in Connie Mack Stadium on opening day in 1948, my first year in the majors. The most exciting game I've been in was the last one in 1950. That was when Dick Sisler hit a three-run homer to beat the Dodgers and win a pennant for us. The greatest fielding play I've ever seen was Snider's catch of Jones' fly ball off the wall in Connie Mack Stadium, saving a game for Brooklyn. It was so good I still don't believe he caught it.
Hal is a good fielder, with a steady throwing arm. He was in 102 games for the Cubs in 1952, batting .219. He had 65 hits and drove in 30 runs, a good percentage. Began in baseball in 1946, spending the season with Nashville and Shelby. Hit .346 for Nashville the next year, and then joined the Cubs in 1948. Led the Southern Association in hits with 218 in 1947.
Third year with the Giants. In 1947 he won 21 games, lost 5. He shows the class that made him fook so good to Giant scouts in the PCL. Like most ball players he did his war stuff gladly and effi- ciently. When he's not playing ball he runs a hardware store in Oregon. Last season he was in 42 games for the Polo Grounders and had an 18-12 record with a 3.61 ERA.
