When speaking of Elmer, Jimmy Dykes, the A's manager said, "No one can beat him for hustle." One of the most daring players in baseball, Elmer came up with the A's at the end of the 1941 season after having a trial in 1940. He missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons while serving as a Lieutenant in the Army. Coming back in 1946, he hit .307 and followed up with .300 in '47 and .305 in '48. He starred in 3 sports in high school.

"Mule" Haas was a member of Connie Mack's great pennant-winning teams of 1929, 1930. and 1931. He formed the dangerous, well-balanced outfield for the A's with "Al" Sim- mons and "Bing" Miller. Haas was not a great player but he was aggressive and colorful. He could hit a ball as hard and as far as anyone. He covered a lot of territory in the Athletic outfield, too. Haas played with the A's from 1928 through 1932, was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1933, and returned to the A's as a free agent in 1938. His value to a ball club is well indicated by the fact that he led the major leagues in sacrifice hits for six years. Haas was appointed a White Sox coach this year.

Edwin's best pitch is a 90-mph change-up that dives in on righties and away from lefties. It has some of the best movement in Baseball. He struck out 35.9% of batters faced.
