Named as "Minor League Player of the Year" by The Sporting News in 1968 after his outstanding season at Rochester, Merv led IL that year in Batting, Runs & Walks and was selected as loop's MVP. Merv made the AL All-Star team in 1971.



Won 5, lost 6, in 1950. Won 4 lost 5, in 1949. Began the 1948 season with Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League. Called up by the Cubs during the campaign. Appeared in 19 games for the major leaguers, and wound up with 5 wins and 6 losses. Started in baseball in 1939. Out of game in 1940. Back again, 1941 to present time, except for 3 years that were spent in military service.



A sore arm stopped "Fire" Trucks from repeating in 1950 the excellent record he made in 1949. In 1950 he was in only 7 games, winning 3 and losing 1. In 1949 he won 19 and lost 11. His earned run average (2.81) was second lowest in League. Led the League in strikeouts with 153. Came to the Tigers toward the end of the 1941 season. In service, 1944, and most of 1945.
