Bob Johnson, the "Cherokee Indian," is one of the most consistent hitters in the American League. He started his major-league career with the Philadelphia Athletics, in 1933, when he was recalled from Portland, of the Pacific Coast League. He is a dangerous batter, since he hits a long ball, and specializes in home runs; last year his batting average was .313 and he hit 30 home runs. For the past four years he has managed to drive in more than 100 runs each year. His 6-year major-league record shows 984 hits in 873 games, and a life-time batting average of .301.
