In baseball since 1917. Most of Jimmy's playing career was spent in his home city with the Athletics. It was quite fitting that he should become the A's skipper when Connie Mack retired as manager after piloting the club for half a century. Jimmy managed White Sox, 1934-46.
Went to bat 667 times in 1951. More than any other player in the league. In 158. games. Hit .295. Had 16 homers, 4 triples, 32 doubles. Drove in 91 runs. Noted for bullet-like throws to the infield. Began in baseball in 1940. Alternated between mound and outfield.
Joe's first year in organized baseball was 1951 and he stepped right into Triple-A ball splitting the season with Montreal of the International League and St. Paul of the American Association. For a rookie, Joe showed exceptional control by striking out far more men than he walked. The Dodgers capitalized on this ability and moved Joe into their Number 1 relief spot in '52.
