Manager Ray Blades, pointing the St. Louis Cardinals toward a pennant, has high hopes for left-hander "Tom" Sunkel. Sunkel, who came to the Cards last year from Atlanta where he won 21 and lost only 5, did not see much action with the Cards but showed enough to earn a crack at a regular berth. He won 4 and lost 4 last year, including among his triumphs a nifty two-hit shutout over the New York Giants. Speed is one of the main factors in Sunkel's pitching - he topped the Southern Association in that department in 1938, and struck out 54 in the 85 innings he hurled last year.
The 24 year old lefthanded hitter batted .280 in the Pacific Coast League in '65. He played in 28 games with K.C. last year. This young righty hurler compiled a fine 13-6 record at Birmingham in 1964. In 5 games at K.C. in late '65, Ron had a 2.70 ERA.
