Nicknamed "Mr. Automatic" because of his fielding prowess, Chico's batting average jumped 36 points last year. Played in 1964 All-Star game.



Billy's work in the World Series will never be forgotten. He had 12 hits in 24 at bats for a .500 average. His 12 hits tied the former Series high. However, Billy got his in 6 games, and the four players previously who had that many made them in seven and eight game series. He had 2 homers, 2 triples and a double among the hits. He wound up with 23 total bases, breaking a six game mark set by Babe Ruth.



One of the early pitching surprises of the 1940 season was young "Chubby" Dean, of the Athletics. Never able to complete a game. in three seasons of pitching with the A's, Dean beat the World Champion Yankees in his first two attempts this season, shutting them out once, and allowing only 1 run the next time. He is a hitting pitcher, starting with the A's as a first baseman in 1936, direct from Duke University. His duties with the Athletics include pinch-hitting. He appeared in 80 games last year, batting .351, driving in 19 runs on 27 hits.
