Canadiens Card of the Day

Jean Guy Talbot
Guy Talbot second year in the NHL was not quite as fruitful as had been hoped, yet he did not fall completely under the spell of the second year jinx. The going was more difficult for him, but by season's end, he began to shake himself loose and performed admirably in the playoffs.

Name that player!

The sale of Dollard St. Laurent to the Chicago Black Hawks left the door wide open for Junior Langlois to step into a permanent defence berth with the Canadiens. And Langlois' play in the late season and playoffs of 1957-58 with Canadiens had much to do with the decision to sell St. Laurent. When called up from Rochester for the last game of the season in Detroit, Canadiens had only three regulars, Harvey, Talbot and Turner on defence. Langlois took a regular turn and played so well that Toe Blake had no qualms about starting him in the semi-finals against the Red Wings two nights later.

An aggressive forward, Claude is of particular value keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. Claude combines speed with stick-handling finesse. A solid two-way hockey player.

The phlegmatic "Gumper" has won more pro trophies than any other goaltender, including the NHL rookie of the year, the Vezina Trophy and the WHL's most valuable player award. Outspoken and inclined to put on weight, Gump has become a real fans' favorite.
