Lions Card of the Day

Glenn Presnell
"Squeezing" the ball is one of the first lessons backfield players must master. Note the way Glenn Presnell of the Detroit Lions has the ball cradled in the hollow of his arm, the hand making a basket over the end and the oval pressed tightly against his ribs. Tendency among young players is to let the ball dangle loosely when about to be tackled and causing a fumble with the tacklers shock. A back must learn instinctively to hug the leather hard at the moment of impact. Many a fine open field run has been spoiled because the carrier fumbles into the hands of the other team and offsets his long gain. "Hug that ball." Glenn Presnell, University of Nebraska, All American Halfback, 1927, Best place kicker in National League. 5 ft. 10 inches, 188 pounds.

Name that player!

Darris forms part of the fine Detroit forward wall. He is a fine blocker and is an expert on trap plays. With Darris in the line, Detroit quarterbacks get more time and protection for accurate passing.

Despite the fact that he was sidelined by injuries for a large share of the 1952 season, Walker returned in the late stages to help spark Detroit's championship drive. Scored on 67-yard sprint against Cleveland in Championship game. Former great All-American star at Southern Methodist. Led the NFL in scoring with 128 points in first year in pro game.

Finished second highest scorer in the League last year with 106 points - first best in extra points with 43. Won Heisman Trophy in 1948 and Maxwell Award in 1947 as College football's top player. Attended high school in Dallas, Tex., playing football with Bobby Layne. One of the game's most popular players.
