The big fellow who takes up so much space and seems to be in the enemy backfield all afternoon is Gil Mains. He can ram through defenses to cross up the cleverest plays and maul opposing passers.
Detroit was 4th in the Western Conference in '63, with 5-8-1. They were 4th in '64, too, with 7-5-2. In '63, they scored 326 points to 265. In '64, their total was 280 to the oppositions' 260. They hope to move up in '65.
The Lions finished up the 1962 season with a solid 11-3 record. Ordinarily that sort of a win-loss mark is good enough to cop the division title, but the Motor City men had the Green Bay Packers to contend with.
