Mavericks Card of the Day

Jaden Hardy
When you first start tending to a garden, make sure to use a good fertilizer to help your fruits and veggies grow strong. Dallas took a page from the gardener's handbook when it planted Hardy into the lineup in 2022-23. He gives his team plenty of necessary sustenance to help the Mavs shoot up with speed.

Name that player!

Signed to two 10-day contracts by the Mavericks during the 1991-92 campaign, Howard's strong play in the stretch drive earned himself a roster spot for 1992-93. Over the season's last eight games, Howard averaged 9.4 PPG on .646 shooting in 19.4 minutes per contest. A former All-Rookie CBA choice and a player in the league's 1991 All-Star Game, Howard averaged 20.8 PPG for the Omaha Racers in 1990-91.

Sam is fundamentally sound but unassuming player who plays taller than he is thanks to his 77-inch wingspan. Sam Co-captained the 1984 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team. He led the Mavericks in offensive rebounds in the 1989-90 season, during which he posted the highest per-game scoring average of his career. With a degree in radio/TV, Sam feels he would be a disc jockey if he weren't playing in the NBA.

Their 1992-93 record aside, the Mavericks have been one of the NBA's expansion success stories since joining the league in 1980. After the usual period of struggles, the Mavs reached the NBA Playoffs for the first time in 1983-84 and have since returned five times. In 1988, Dallas made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals before losing to the eventual-champion Lakers. DID YOU KNOW? The Mavericks have never won a game in Boston. The short list for team nicknames included Express and Wranglers before Mavericks was chosen. The Mavericks have only had two players - Mike luzzolino (1991-present) and Mark Wade (1989-90) - who were under six feet tall. SCORECARD. Twenty-eight club and arena records fell or were tied December 29, 1989, as the Mavericks played their first triple-overtime game, finally yielding to Portland 144-140.

Dirk Nowitzki
When Dirk was growing up in Germany watching the Chicago Bulls on television, he fell in love with the style of game played by Scottie Pippen. Amazingly, Nowitzki now can do many of those same things on the court - but at 7-feet tall. “Dirk is such a freak," Grizzlies assistant coach Lionel Hollins says of the four-time NBA All-Star. "This guy is 7-foot and plays like a guard."
