"I won't let that happen," he said. True to his word, the lefty sparked a turnaround that yielded a division crown in 1999 and a World Series title in 2001.

There's a reason Arizona keeps trying out Lawlar at different positions, giving him looks at second and third base in addition to his regular post at shortstop. The team wants to get his bat into the lineup in any way possible. "He's too good of a player to not figure out a place to have him play," said general manager Mike Hazen.
