Washington's rebuilding blueprint envisions Carter patrolling the hot corner for years. He had some injury woes in 2021, but showed his power promise with four homers in his last 50 at-bats of August.



Washington jumped at the chance after a Boston roster crunch made Jeter available. The "Derek" namesake, whose carrying tool is power, popped his first Major League home run off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.



When Dom returned to Citi Field in April, the Mets toasted him with a video tribute. Their loss was Washington's gain. He made a brilliant play that night, invoking memories of so many similar ones in New York.
