Robert Parish
At 38, center Robert Parish of the Boston Celtics is the oldest player in the NBA. And as "the Chief" enters his 16th season in the league while battling the likes of Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson night after night, the eight-time All-Star is not about to let up. "I always take it as a personal challenge when I'm playing against the younger centers," Parish told "NBA Inside Stuff" (Saturdays on NBC throughout the NBA season, check local listings). "I try to do well against them because they're the new kids on the block. Parish has distinguished himself as a leader by example for the Celtics over the years. But that is not the reason he was dubbed "the Chief." "When I first came to Boston (from Golden State) in 1980," Parish explained, "I was always talking about this movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' with Jack Nicholson, of whom I'm a big fan. (Former teammate) Cedric Maxwell told me that I had the characteristics of the Indian character in the movie - the Chief." And the nickname stuck.
