Gus Suhr, the "Iron Man" of the National League, holds the league record for consecutive games played with 822. He started his professional ball-playing career in 1925, with San Francisco, of the Pacific Coast League, and in 1929 had 299 hits for a batting average of .381. It was on the strength of this batting record that he was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and has been their regular first baseman since 1930. He holds the National League record for participating in double plays, 150, in one season a feat which was accomplished in 1938. For his 9-year major-league record, Gus Suhr has had 1320 hits in 1302 games, for a batting average of .278.

Paul hit the ground running in his rookie season in 2024, turning batters away like a big-league veteran and not a 22-year-old newbie. The mustachioed Skenes fanned seven over four innings in his first MLB start, then whiffed 11 in his next turn in the rotation. He had a 6-0 record and 1.90 ERA a...

Back to the Front! Pirates card back du jour...
"Gus" Suhr
In starting double plays, first basemen must be quick to whip the ball to second and dash back to their base to take the return, throw. Often when the first baseman is drawn too far away from his bag to make a stop, the second baseman or pitcher must run over to cover on the return throw. Be sure of getting the man at second, lest in your haste you throw wide and lose both runners. The im- portant rule in starting all double plays is "Make certain of the first man". Gus Suhr of the Pirates is an example of a fast footed, accurate throwing first baseman.
