Gary Carter

The runner-up to John Montefusco for the N.L.'s Rookie of the Year award, Gary had a fine season in '75. He hit .270 with 20 doubles, 1 triple, 17 homers, and a club-leading 68 RBI in 144 contests split between behind the bat and in the outfield. The Expos signed him in 1972 and were impressed by his 23 homer, 83 RBI season for Memphis in '74, a year in which he also led I.L. catchers in fielding. He got a late season trial in '74, in which he hit .407, and now has 20 doubles, 2 triples, 18 homers, 74 RBI, and a .277 average in 153 big league games.

Drafted from the Chicago Cubs, Bill will see plenty of action with the Expos both as a starter and reliever. He earned his shot in the majors after winning five of seven games at Tacoma. As a Cub rookie, he was a fine strikeout pitcher fanning 52 batters in 63 innings.

Gary was quickly picked up by the Expos during the expansion draft last winter. This thin 24 year old closed the 1968 campaign like a house afire as his batting average soared. In fact, not one regular on the Phils had a higher mark than Gary's. Gary is given the best chance of winning the Expos'...

One of the real surprises of '82... Took over as Expos 3B with the trade of Larry Parrish and wound up 2nd on club in HR and RBI... Ranked 7th in NL In HR and had 281 total bases ...Named College Player of Year in '79 when he hit .398 with 23 HR and NCAA record 102 RBI for Cal. St. Fullerton.
