Dodgers Card of the Day

Chris Van Cuyk

Back in the Big Leagues for another try, the tall southpaw had an impressive 11 and 4 record with Montreal last year after starting the season in Brooklyn. Chris started his baseball career in 1946 with Cambridge in the Eastern Shore League. After winning 25 games and striking out 279 he was promoted to Fort Worth of the Texas League. The Dodgers brought him up in the middle of the '50 season after he won 14.

Name that player!

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF BASEBALL by Don Hoak. As far as I'm concerned, "Hustle" is the most important part of baseball. Most ball players, at birth, were given the power to hit the ball out of the park. If a fellow is a good ball-player, with no power, he must do something to warrant a big lea...

One of the highest paid bonus players in the Dodger organization, Jeff has a fine career ahead of him. Relegated to second string because of the presence of John Roseboro, Jeff gained valuable experience watching the veteran backstop handle pitchers. When John was injured, Jeff took over the catc...

Carl Daniel Erskine was signed by Brooklyn in July 1946, for a bonus of $3,500 and re-bid with others for his services and signed him for the second time for a $5,000 bonus in 1947. He pitched a no-hit no-run game against the Chicago Cubs, winning 5-0, allowing only one base on balls to deprive h...

Back to the Front! Dodgers card back du jour...

Gil Hodges

Almost immediately after Gil was signed by Dodgers he went into service for three years. Gil started his career in OB as a third baseman, and it wasn't until 1946 when he was with Dodgers' Newport News farm team that he became a catcher. He remained behind plate until last season when Dodgers switched him to first base. He played 134 games, hit .250 and batted in 70 runs.
