Fielding - Catchers must shift their feet for a throw to the bases while the pitched ball is still in the air. A little practice will teach a catcher to settle a little back on the right foot as the ball approaches. By making the catch close to the body, and whenever possible on the throwing side, the catcher will be in perfect position to start his throw without any waste motion. Junior Gilliam
"Junior" won the N.L. Rookie-of-the-Year Title in '53! He broke the N.L. record for Walks by Rookies (100), led the Loop in Triples and got on base in 24 straight games. A surehanded fielder, he placed 2nd in DP's for N.L. 2nd Basemen. At Montreal in '52, he was the International League's Most Valuable Player.
When Junior first started, he had trouble hitting curves. On the advice of a coach, he decided to become a switch hitter! Now Junior hits all pitching... righty, lefty, fastball or curves!
