Young surprised his parents by buying each of them new cars at the conclusion of the 2020 season. His parents are his biggest fans, especially his mom, Carla, but she can also be a critic when he doesn't get sacks. "It definitely gives me more motivation," said Young, who ranked second on the team with 7.5 sacks in 2020.

In football, they translate into ups for the ball, tackle-breaking moves with it and explosiveness at the line into blocks, Washington gets the benefit of all of it after snagging the Boise State tight end in the fourth round in 2021.

Before Patterson's record-setting career at the University at Buffalo, he grew up in the D.C. suburb of Glenn Dale, MD., rooting for Washington and especially safety Sean Taylor. It was a dream come true when Washington signed him after he went undrafted. "It's unreal," Patterson said. "It feels like a movie."

Washington's pass rush thrived in 2020. Much of the unit's success can be attributed to Young, who lived up to the billing as a top-5 pick. The Defensive Rookie of the Year started all 15 games he played, constantly drew double-teams and finished second on the club in sacks, tallying 7.5.
