Pirates Card of the Day

Arky Vaughan
Arky Vaughan last year maintained a major league record of never hitting below .300. For the ninth consecutive season, since he joined the Pirates in 1932, Vaughan batted .300 or better. His mark in 1940 was an even .300 but he reached a peak in timeliness with 95 runs batted in, and led the league in triples with 15, and runs scored with 113, while not missing a single one of the 156 games in which the Pirates took part. Vaughan has appeared in 5 of the inter-league all-star games and boasts a batting average for the mid-season classic of .313.

Name that player!

Bob had his best year in 1961 when he was the National League batting champ. The outfielder hit 3 triples in a game in '58 to tie a mark.

Marcano made his way into the starting lineup on April 15, 2021 and quickly showed staying power. Against Pittsburgh, the infielder helped San Diego jump out to a big lead with an RBI double-his first in the big leagues-to cap a four-run opening frame. The Steel City squad was so impressed, it procured his services that summer.

Al was the big stopper for the Pirates last year leading the club in E.R.A. The thin righty's excellent control makes him a top relief man.

Debs Garms
When the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased Debs Garms from Boston on March 3, 1940, little did they think they were getting the prospective leading hitter of the National League. That's exactly what Garms was - he batted .355 in 103 games for the Bucs and captured the league hitting crown. Garms, who plays third as well as the outfield, drove in 57 runs for the Pirates, topping all his previous efforts as a major leaguer. The Texan may prove a strong cog in the "dark horse" Pirate machine that Frankie Frisch has built up.
